About the Civil Partnership Bill
On the 17th November 2004 The House of Lords, passed the Civil Partnership Bill into Law, which then received Royal Ascent on the 18th November 2004. This act now allows same-sex couples to commit to one another in the eyes of the law with a Commitment Ceremony - The ceremony will be performed by a Registrar. The Act creates a new legal relationship of civil partnership, which two people of the same-sex can form by signing a registration document. It also provides same-sex couples who form a civil partnership with parity of treatment in a wide range of legal matters with those opposite-sex couples who enter into a civil marriage. You have been able to formally register for the Civil Ceremony from the 5th December 2005. There is then a statutory waiting period of 15 days which means that the first ceremonies themselves were performed on the 21st December 2005.
